My Experience Watching Justice League With MMX4D

MX4D is marketed as being a step up from 3D. It attempts to provide a true immersive experience by making your seat move with the film's movements, emitting smells that correspond with what's on screen, and other cool effects like strobe lighting, snow, and fog. I was really excited when I went to see Justice League with my classmates for an e-Comm field trip (despite not knowing much about the DC universe, admittedly). I really enjoyed certain aspects of the 4D, like the seat moving during the fight scenes. However, I felt like some of the other effects were just distractions from the movie and seemed kind of unnecessary, like the water spraying in our faces (it was loud and kind of jarring), and the smells which honestly just seemed "off."

My favorite part of the whole field-trip actually wasn't the 4D at all, but getting to tour the theatre and see all of the cool technology B&B had renovated. It made me feel pretty proud to think Kansas was the only state in the midwest to have such state-of-the-art features. My least favorite part was probably the weird smell that kind of lingered in the theatre because of the effects. Unfortunately, if it wasn't for the 4D, I probably would have gotten a little bored watching Justice League. Because I wasn't accustomed to most of the characters or the older movies, I didn't understand much and didn't feel a real connection to the characters. It was undeniably cool-looking though, and the costume and set design was awesome.

In my opinion, I feel like 4D would be best suited for horror movies. Just imagining the chair lurching during a jump-scare sound terrifyingly awesome. If I was in charge of assigning what movies got 4D, I would definitely put in some horror. While 4D would definitely enhance a scary movie, I feel like it honestly just distracts from other types of movies and I would typically prefer a 2D or 3D movie because they allow me to focus better.

In conclusion, I liked the 4D. I feel like it could definitely use some improvements, but it's still a relatively new concept so I don't think we should be too critical on it. In the future, I can see 4D movies being a huge hit as they perfect the technology further so it feels even more immersive. It definitely provides an experience you can't have watching a movie on the couch at home.
